2-Day Chimpanzee Tracking in Bururi Forest & Karera Falls

Reserve orientation & briefing
Settle in and receive a guide briefing on chimpanzee tracking etiquette and what to expect. Bururi’s compact size makes chimp sightings more reliable than at the much larger Kibira National Park, which has a growing population of 60+ individuals.

Overnight: Diocese de Bururi (or similar)
Rest and prepare for an early 5:00 am start the following morning.

5:00 am — Early breakfast & forest departure
Wake up early, have breakfast, and head into Bururi Forest Reserve. Dawn is the optimal time to find chimpanzees active and calling.

Chimpanzee tracking (3–4 hours)
Track Bururi’s resident chimpanzees through montane forest with expert guides. Duration varies depending on where the troop is that day. Note that Bururi’s chimps are less habituated than those at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania — sightings often occur in the canopy rather than at ground level, offering a wilder, more authentic encounter.

Hike to Karera Falls
After tracking, travel to Karera Waterfalls — one of Burundi’s most spectacular natural landmarks. A rewarding trail leads through lush scenery to a series of cascading falls.

Return transfer to Bujumbura
Relax on the drive back. Drop-off at your hotel, Bujumbura Airport, or any preferred location — marking the end of your Burundi wildlife tour.
